Three of the most dangerous words any parent can hastily utter in response to a drug problem are: “Not my teen!”

Drug abuse poses a threat to all families, and no child is immune from the drug epidemic.
It is important to get help for your children when they need it.

Your role is key! It is very helpful for parents and legal guardians to participate in some levels of their children’s treatment. Signatures are required to authorize treatment from the start, so custodial adults must accompany their children during the enrollment process. Additionally, parents and guardians are required to attend an hour-long, multi-family education group once per week.

Program Details

This nine-week program is not residential, which means adolescents get to live at home.

The program's content is divided into three areas:
  • Substance Abuse Education for adolescents: understanding addictions and recovery, the hazards of specific drugs, living without drugs, understanding/preventing the relapse process, etc.
  • Process Group for adolescents: making sense of what’s happening, managing emotions, building healthy relationships, learning how to positively deal with life’s challenges, and similar topics.
  • Family Education for both the parents/guardians and adolescents: understanding addictions and recovery in adolescents, family communication, getting everyone’s needs met, watching for relapse patterns, learning about other resources available in the community, and other important information for families to know.
For the first five weeks, adolescents attend treatment sessions that meet two days during the week for two hours each day. During this time, the teen attends substance abuse education and the process group. Parents and guardians also attend some of the treatment together with their adolescents: family education meets weekly for one hour.

During the remaining four weeks, adolescents attend just the process group for one hour each week as “aftercare” to help prevent relapses.

Cost

As Central Indiana’s oldest social service not-for-profit organization, Family Service is committed to making services affordable. Fees are based on each family’s unique circumstances and ability to pay. Cost should not be an issue.

If a government case worker or probation officer has advised you of the need for chemical dependency treatment, enrollment in this program may fall under some of Family Service’s existing government contracts. Call us or check with the case worker and/or probation officer for details

Enrollment / Additional Information
