This list depicts behaviors that indicate your child may be using drugs. While these symptoms may be signs of drug use, they may also simply be signs of normal adolescent growing pains. A single symptom does not indicate an alcohol or drug problem, but a combination of two or more symptoms should definitely be a cause for concern.

As a parent, legal guardian, or caring adult, watch for these signs and symptoms provided by the U.S. Department of Education:
  • A drop in grades
  • Switching friends
  • Emotional highs and lows
  • Defiance of rules
  • Becoming more secretive
  • Loss of initiative
  • Withdrawing from family
  • Change in physical hygiene
  • Not informing you of school activities
  • Staying out late
  • Isolating themselves
  • Money or alcohol missing
  • Selling possessions
  • Feeling manipulated and bargained
  • Abusive behavior
  • Weight changes
  • Short tempered
  • Legal problems
  • Defensive
  • Calls from school
  • Coming home drunk or high
  • Finding paraphernalia
  • Pale complexion
