The lists below describe behaviors that may indicate symptoms of trauma and drug use. A single symptom does not indicate a problem, but a combination of two or more symptoms should definitely be a cause for concern.

 

Signs and symptoms of trauma
  • Distressing thoughts or intrusive images
  • Disturbing dreams of the traumatic events
  • Efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings, or conversations associated with the trauma
  • Lack of interest or participation in important activities, events, and holidays
  • A sense of detachment from others
  • Inability to experience a full range of emotions
  • A reduction in awareness of surroundings
  • A pessimistic, fatalistic attitude regarding the future
  • Sleep disturbances and Irritability
  • Loss of personal identity
  • Feeling that one’s surroundings are changed
  • Lack of concentration
  • Hyper-vigilance
  • Sad or guilty affect and others signs of depression
  • Alcohol and/or drug use
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • A pattern of interpersonal conflict
  • Verbal or physical threats or behaviors
  • Inability to maintain employment due to authority/co-worker conflicts or anxiety
  • A subjective sense of numbing

 

Signs and symptoms of a problem with drugs and/or alcohol
  • Switching friends
  • Emotional highs and lows
  • Becoming more secretive
  • Loss of initiative
  • Withdraw
  • Change in physical hygiene
  • Staying out late
  • Isolation
  • Money or alcohol missing
  • Selling possessions
  • Abusive behavior
  • Weight changes
  • Short tempered
  • Legal problems
  • Defensive
  • Pale complexion
