Parent Education

Parenting can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it can also be challenging and frightening. Parenting classes offered through Family Service equip parents with the skills to deal with the many unknowns of child-rearing. Instructors teach the developmental needs of children at different ages as well as ways to effectively manage behavior. Parenting is a tough job and requires skills and information to be effective. All parents can use a little help now and then.


Four unique 8-week programs cover:

Parenting preschoolers (birth to age 4)

Parenting school-age children (ages 5 to 11)

Parenting adolescents (ages 12+)

Latino parenting (all ages) -- evenings only


Each program includes behavior management:

Parenting styles

Child development

Appropriate expectations

Exploring goals and values

Creating family rules

Child development

Communication

Problem solving

Family meetings


Additional age-appropriate topics covered:

Child safety

Bonding and attachment

Identifying and responding to feelings

Nutrition

Talking about sex/sexuality

Anger management

Stress management

Alcohol/drugs/depression/suicide

Domestic violence and abuse

Self-esteem
